Parent Burnout & Late-Diagnosed ADHD and Autism Support | Neuro-Affirming Psychologists on the Gold Coast

When you're holding everyone else together, it can be hard to notice how much you're carrying.

Parenting is demanding.

Parenting while navigating your own neurodivergence, supporting a neurodivergent child, or trying to make sense of a late ADHD diagnosis can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Many people tell us they spend so much time meeting everyone else's needs that they've lost sight of their own. You might be feeling constantly exhausted, emotionally stretched, or wondering why the strategies that used to work no longer seem enough.

At The Neurodiverse Network, our Gold Coast psychologists provide neuro-affirming, compassionate support for adults who are navigating parent burnout, late-diagnosed ADHD, Autism, life transitions, and the everyday challenges that can come with these experiences.

Whether you're seeking support for yourself, your family, or both, we're here to help you better understand what's happening and explore strategies that fit your unique circumstances.

Does any of this sound familiar?

You may be:

  • Feeling mentally and emotionally exhausted most days

  • Wondering why parenting feels harder than it seems to for other people

  • Constantly masking or "holding it together" until you're home

  • Feeling guilty for needing time alone

  • Overthinking conversations or worrying you've said the wrong thing

  • Finding that your usual coping strategies no longer work

  • Feeling overwhelmed by noise, clutter, competing demands, or decision-making

  • Wondering whether ADHD or Autism could explain experiences you've had throughout your life

  • Navigating perimenopause while noticing changes in attention, emotional regulation, or executive functioning

  • Trying to support your neurodivergent child while also learning more about yourself

These experiences can have many different contributing factors. A psychologist can work alongside you to better understand your individual situation and explore supports that align with your goals and values.

What therapy may involve

Every person's experience is different, so therapy is tailored to your individual needs.

Depending on what brings you to therapy, sessions may include opportunities to:

  • Better understand your unique patterns, strengths, and challenges

  • Explore burnout, stress, and nervous system regulation

  • Develop practical strategies for managing everyday demands

  • Build self-compassion and reduce self-criticism

  • Explore identity following a late ADHD or Autism diagnosis

  • Navigate parenting challenges from a neuro-affirming perspective

  • Strengthen communication, boundaries, and relationships

  • Work through life transitions with support that respects your individual experiences

Our psychologists draw on evidence-informed approaches while recognising that there is no one-size-fits-all way to support neurodivergent people.

Who might this support suit?

Our psychologists work with adults who may be:

  • Parents feeling emotionally or mentally overwhelmed

  • Adults exploring ADHD or Autism later in life

  • Women navigating perimenopause alongside neurodivergence

  • Adults experiencing burnout, chronic stress, or emotional exhaustion

  • Parents of autistic or ADHD children seeking support for themselves

  • Adults wanting to better understand masking, identity, and self-acceptance

  • Individuals looking for neuro-affirming psychological support on the Gold Coast

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ADHD or Autism diagnosis before seeing a psychologist?

No. Many people seek support while they are exploring questions about their experiences, regardless of whether they have a formal diagnosis.

Can I see a psychologist if I'm feeling burnt out but I'm not sure why?

Absolutely. Burnout can have many contributing factors. Therapy can provide space to better understand what's contributing to your experience and explore strategies that may support your wellbeing.

I'm a parent of a neurodivergent child. Can I book for myself?

Yes. Many parents find it helpful to have dedicated support while navigating the demands of parenting. Looking after your own wellbeing can be an important part of supporting your family. Speak to your GP to see if you qualify for a valid Medicare refferal.

Is therapy only for people in crisis?

Not at all. Some people seek therapy during particularly difficult times, while others use it as a space for reflection, self-understanding, and developing practical strategies for everyday life.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to book an appointment with one of our psychologists.

If you'd like to access Medicare rebates, you'll need a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician where applicable.

Are appointments available in person and online?

Yes. Depending on the psychologist, appointments may be available at our Gold Coast clinic as well as via secure telehealth.
