We had a wonderful get together at the recent Meet & Greet with @leannemaskell

Held in our new NDIS office, the group sat together with Leanne and discussed different topics about writing, rejection sensitivity dysphoria & neurodiversity.

Later we recorded a conversation about the importance of neuro-affirming care, the differences between UK & Australian healthcare systems and alot in between! 😉

Our awesome practice manager and ND advocate, Jaimie Semple - shares her journey to learning about her own neurodiversity and identifying the link with the co-occurring symptoms below.

You may be new to these terms so here’s a brief explainer:

❤️ POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome)
 A condition affecting the autonomic nervous system, where heart rate increases significantly on standing, often linked with dizziness, fatigue, and brain fog.

🤧 MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome)
 A condition involving inappropriate mast cell activation, which can contribute to allergic-type symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, and fatigue.

🙆🏽‍♀️ Hypermobility
 Joint hypermobility refers to joints moving beyond typical ranges and may be associated with pain, fatigue, and autonomic differences in some individuals.

🦷TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint)

TMJ Disorder can cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw muscles and joints, often resulting in symptoms like pain in the jaw, ear, or face, clicking/grinding sounds, and limited jaw movement.

The neurodiversity link:
 Research shows higher rates of autonomic, connective tissue, and immune-related conditions reported in some autistic and ADHD populations. (These are associations, not causes, and experiences vary widely).

As more awareness (and research) goes into ND and the surrounding co-occurring challenges, the MORE empowered we become in understanding ourselves better.

 (Raj et al., 2018; Baeza-Velasco et al., 2018; Eccles et al., 2021; Celletti & Camerota, 2013)

“I had to read a paragraph, and they gave me a quiz, gave me 10 questions based on what I’d just read, and I think I got three right,”

“Then they put a computer on my eyes, showing where my eyes went when I read. My eyes would jump four words and go back two words, and I also had a little bit of a lazy eye, like a crossed eye, which they always have to correct in photos.”

“I thought I wasn’t smart. I just couldn’t retain anything. Now I had this great discovery. I felt like all of my childhood traumas, tragedies, dramas were explained.”

👉🏽 Buy a copy of “This is ADHD” By Chanelle Moriah
👉🏽 Sit with or let your loved one thumb through the book
👉🏽 Pop a tab on each page with a trait they can relate to

A “Hairy” Book can help the individual learn about their ND traits in a meaningful and self driven way 🙌🏼

This may help with any questions or “a-ha” moments you or your loved one may have about the traits & experiences they may have.
