Daniel*, 34, was struggling with his friendships.

His friends often described him as “rigid” because he became upset when plans changed.

If his friends suddenly changed:

“Dinner at 7” to “Actually, let’s meet at 9 and go somewhere else.”

Daniel would become frustrated, send a blunt message or sometimes decide “forget it, I’m not coming.”

His friends interpreted this as:

“Daniel doesn’t care about seeing us.”

But that wasn’t what was happening.

Through therapy, Daniel began exploring whether his reactions could be connected to his need for predictability.

He realised:

“I’m not angry because my friends changed the plan. I’m overwhelmed because I haven’t had time to mentally prepare for the new plan.”

That distinction changed the conversation.
Instead of focusing only on

“How do I stop reacting?”

They also explored:

“How can I help other people understand what I need when plans change?”

Understanding this doesn’t mean every reaction is okay or that plans can never change.

It means we can advocate for support from loved ones, through education, understanding and slight adjustment in communication.

Quick Swaps at your grocery shop to increase nutrition intake in your (or the kids) diet!

Many kids LOVE white bread (and same with adults-especially with fairy sprinkles on it!) so moving to a different type with a new taste or texture may ALSO not be considered “safe”.

A #neuroaffirming dietitian understands the nuance that “simple” swaps may not work for #neurodivergent individuals and sometimes the same safe bread with a little difference can add the nutrients you need each day.

Anna*, 45, is the first one awake every morning.

Before she’s even had a coffee, she’s already mentally preparing for the day ahead.

One child doesn’t want to get dressed.

Another is overwhelmed about going to school.
Breakfast becomes negotiation after negotiation.
Someone can’t find their shoes.
Someone else is already in tears.

By 8:45am, Anna feels like she’s lived an entire day.

Then comes work, appointments, making dinner that everyone can tolerate, managing homework, navigating sibling conflict, encouraging showers, and trying to settle everyone at bedtime.

She loves her children deeply.

But lately she’s noticed she’s running on empty.

Many parents and carers experience seasons where the emotional load feels incredibly heavy.

Counselling offers a supportive, confidential space to pause, reflect and explore practical ways of navigating these challenges without judgement.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before making an appointment. You don’t need to be in crisis.

Sometimes it simply helps to have someone alongside you while you work through what life is asking of you right now.

For parents of neurodivergent children, it can also be reassuring to work with a counsellor who understands both professionally and personally that family life may look different from the outside, and who offers support that is neuro-affirming, compassionate and tailored to your family’s unique strengths and challenges.

If this feels familiar, perhaps it’s time to remember that your wellbeing matters too.

It may be easy for other people to look from the outside and think things like

But the truth for many #neurodivergent families - the device at mealtimes serves a vital function in assisting the child get adequate food intake OR allow for the family to dine out once in a while.

Kenji and Susan* were genuinely excited when the children’s grandparents offered to take the children out for a special dinner.

They were also a little nervous.

Their youngest daughter, Ellen, is autistic, and restaurants can be challenging for her.

Bright lights, background music, long waits, unfamiliar smells and lots of conversations happening at once can quickly become overwhelming.

They knew their parents meant well, but they also know how dining out often looks different for neurodivergent families.

It’s not about being “fussy” or “poorly behaved.”

It’s about creating an environment where everyone has the best chance of enjoying time together.

That’s why we put together these practical tips.

Every neurodivergent child is different, and what works for one family may not work for another so finding the right supports often involves trial, error and a little flexibility.

Case Study:

At 54, Trisha* received an Autism diagnosis.

As she learned more about herself, one conversation with her psychologist stayed with her.

The psychologist asked,

“How have you been feeling this week?”

Trisha stared back blankly.

“I don’t know.”

She wasn’t trying to avoid the question.

She genuinely didn’t know.

Later, her psychologist shared an analogy.

Imagine someone asks you what today’s weather is like…

But there are no windows.

You know there’s weather outside.

You just can’t see it clearly enough to describe it.

For Trisha, that was exactly what emotions felt like.

She often knew something wasn’t right.

She just couldn’t identify what it was until much later.

Sometimes she’d become quiet for no obvious reason.

Sometimes she’d cry while watching television and have no idea why.

Sometimes she’d feel irritable all afternoon, only to realise later she’d skipped lunch, was overwhelmed by noise at the supermarket, and hadn’t had any time to herself all day.

For years, she believed she was “bad at talking about feelings.”

Learning about #alexithymia a trait that can make identifying and describing emotions more difficult—helped her look at those experiences differently.

Instead of asking herself,

“Why can’t I explain how I feel?”

She became curious.

“What is my body trying to tell me?”

She began noticing the clues before she found the words.

Tight shoulders.

A racing heart.

Feeling unusually tired.

Wanting to leave a noisy room.

The emotions didn’t suddenly become obvious.

But she no longer believed there was something wrong with her for needing more time to understand them.

For some people, learning about alexithymia can provide a helpful framework for understanding their own experiences.

Alexithymia may be more common in autistic people, but not every autistic person experiences it, and it can occur in people with and without neurodevelopmental differences.

Case Study (Fictional):
“I thought I was just too sensitive?.”

Michael* was 42 when he was diagnosed with ADHD.

Looking back, one experience stood out.

A simple comment from his manager could stay with him for days.

One afternoon his manager said,

“Could you pop into my office when you have a minute?”

For the next hour, Michael’s mind raced.

👉🏽 “I’ve done something wrong.”

👉🏽“They’re disappointed in me.”

👉🏽 “I’m going to lose my job.”

When he finally walked into the office…

His manager simply wanted to ask whether he’d be available to help with a new project.

Michael laughed with relief.

But he also felt confused.

“Why does my brain always go there first?”

Later, he learned about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)—a term many people with ADHD use to describe experiencing criticism or the possibility of rejection as especially emotionally painful.

His psychologist shared an analogy.

Imagine everyone has a turtle shell 🐢

The shell doesn’t stop life from bumping into you.

It just softens the impact.

Now imagine your shell is much softer.

The same bump…

The same comment…

The same delayed text message…

Can feel much bigger.

Learning about #RSD didn’t stop Michael from feeling deeply.

But it helped him pause before believing every fearful thought his brain offered.

Instead of asking,

“Why am I so sensitive?”

He began asking,

“Could this be my brain trying to protect me?”

For many people with #ADHD, learning about RSD provides a compassionate way of understanding experiences they’ve carried for years. Not everyone with ADHD experiences RSD, and not everyone who relates to these experiences has ADHD.
