Using Virtual Reality to Practise Social Situations for Neurodivergent Children - Diverse VR

Why We Created DIVERSE VR — And Why I’m So Excited About What’s Coming

By Amelia-Rose Read Clinical Psychologist & Founder, The Neurodiverse Network & Diverse VR

As a Gold Coast clinical psychologist — and as someone who is neurodivergent myself — I’ve spent years sitting alongside children, teens, and families who are doing their absolute best in a world that often doesn’t make sense to them.

One thing has always stood out to me.

Many neurodivergent young people don’t struggle because they don’t want friends, confidence, or independence — they struggle because the way we traditionally teach social and life skills often doesn’t match how their brains learn.

We ask them to practise in unpredictable, high-pressure environments… and then wonder why anxiety, shutdowns, or avoidance show up.

And that’s exactly why we created DIVERSE VR

A Different Way to Learn

DIVERSE VR is a virtual reality learning experience designed specifically for neurodivergent young people.

It gives children and adolescents the opportunity to practise real-world social situations in a safe, structured, low-pressure environment — before they have to face them in everyday life.

Instead of learning through trial-and-error in overwhelming real-world settings, they can:

  • Practise conversations step-by-step

  • Learn how to make and maintain friendships

  • Build confidence in social situations

  • Explore fairness, teamwork, and emotional regulation

  • Develop skills at their own pace — without judgement

The goal isn’t to make autistic kids “act neurotypical.”

The goal is confidence, understanding, and choice.

Why VR Works So Well for Neurodivergent Brains

Virtual reality creates something incredibly powerful:

Predictability + immersion + safety.

In VR, young people can:

  • Pause and retry situations

  • Learn without social risk

  • Focus without sensory overload from busy environments

  • Build success experiences that transfer into real life

For many of the kids I work with, confidence doesn’t come from being told what to do — it comes from experiencing success repeatedly in a way that feels manageable.

That’s what DIVERSE VR is designed to do.

Designed by Clinicians. Built with Lived Experience.

DIVERSE VR isn’t a generic tech product.

It has been created by a team who understand neurodiversity from both professional and personal perspectives — including my own lived experience with autism and ADHD.

Every module is grounded in evidence-based social learning principles and real clinical practice.

We’re not guessing what kids need.

We’re building what we wish existed years ago.

What Makes DIVERSE VR Different?

Most social skills programs rely heavily on role-play, worksheets, or group settings — which can feel overwhelming or artificial for many neurodivergent young people.

DIVERSE VR offers:

✔️ Engaging, immersive learning

✔️ Structured skill building without pressure

✔️ Opportunities for repetition and mastery

✔️ Support for therapists, parents, and educators

✔️ A neuroaffirming approach that respects individual differences

This is about building real confidence — not masking.

The Bigger Vision

This project started as a simple question:

What if learning social skills felt safe, empowering, and actually enjoyable?

Since then, DIVERSE VR has grown into something much bigger — a vision for accessible, innovative supports that remove barriers for neurodivergent young people and their families.

We’ve already seen early pilot sessions where children who usually avoid social situations begin to engage, practise, and even laugh while learning.

And honestly — as a clinician — that’s the part that gives me goosebumps.

We’re Just Getting Started

Right now, we’re entering an exciting stage of growth.

We’re refining modules, expanding access, and building partnerships to bring

DIVERSE VR to more families, schools, and clinicians.

And we want you to be part of this journey.

  • A parent looking for innovative supports for your child
