In Her Own Words: Q&A with Gold Coast Psychologist Jessica Roche

What are some of the challenges you’re especially interested in supporting people through?

I’m especially passionate about supporting neurodivergent individuals across the lifespan to better understand themselves, reduce shame and self-criticism, and build lives that feel more sustainable, authentic, and aligned with their strengths. I have a particular interest in working with Autism, ADHD, anxiety, burnout, masking, rejection sensitivity, and self-esteem challenges.

I also enjoy supporting individuals navigating eating and body image concerns, sensory differences, perfectionism, trauma, relationship and interpersonal challenges, life transitions, and workplace or school stress.

What made you choose psychology in the first place?

I chose psychology because I’ve always been drawn to understanding people — their experiences, emotions, relationships, and the ways life can shape how they see themselves and the world around them.

I wanted to work in a field where I could genuinely support people through difficult periods, help them feel understood, and empower them to build more fulfilling and authentic lives. Over time, I became especially passionate about neurodiversity-affirming practice and creating safe, compassionate spaces where individuals feel accepted, supported, and able to embrace who they are.

What types of people do you feel most drawn to working with — and what lights you up about that work?

I’m passionate about helping individuals make sense of their experiences through a more compassionate and strengths-based lens, while building practical tools that genuinely support their wellbeing and daily life.

Who do you think tends to feel most comfortable working with you?

People often feel comfortable working with me when they’re looking for a warm, non-judgmental, Gold Coast Psychologist. Clients who appreciate a balance of compassion, authenticity, and practical strategies or tools often resonate with my style.

Outside of qualifications, what personal strengths do you bring into your work?

As someone who is neurodivergent and diagnosed later in life, I bring both professional and lived understanding to my work.

What’s something about you that might surprise people?

Outside of work, I’m a very curious person and love learning — especially anything related to psychology, neuroscience, and neurodiversity. I also love being active outdoors, travelling, and spending time with my dog and loved ones.

What approaches do you draw from in your work?

My integrative approach draws from a variety of therapeutic modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT),

  • DBT-informed strategies,

  • Flash Technique,

  • Trauma-Informed Stabilisation Treatment (Level 1 trained),

  • Mindfulness-based practices, and

  • EFT tapping as a somatic tool for anxiety and emotional regulation.

Each modality is carefully selected based on individual needs, ensuring treatment that is both effective and personally resonant.
