Accredited Mental Health Social Worker: Goldy Albu (she / her)

In her own words:

“What are some of the challenges you’re especially interested in supporting people through"

I’m particularly drawn to working with people who are trying to make sense of themselves—often later in life, and often in the context of neurodivergence.

What made you choose psychology (or your role) in the first place?

My path to becoming a Gold Coast Accredited Mental Health Social Worker came from a deep interest in understanding people and lived experience — how we think, feel, adapt, and survive through difficult experiences.

After many years working in structured, high-pressure corporate environments, I felt drawn to more meaningful, human-centred work.

Becoming an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and therapist allowed me to combine my analytical thinking with compassion and curiosity, and to support people in a way that is both practical and deeply transformative.

What types of people do you feel most drawn to working with — and what lights you up about that work?

I feel most drawn to working with neurodivergent individuals who have experienced trauma or feel like they don’t quite “fit” in the world.

I particularly enjoy working with people who are insightful and motivated but may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or misunderstood.

What lights me up is seeing those moments where things begin to make sense for them — when they feel validated, gain new skills, and start to experience relief, confidence, and a stronger sense of self.

What’s something you wish more people knew about the work you do?

I wish more people knew that therapy is not just about talking — it’s about creating real, lasting change.

Approaches like EMDR can help the brain process experiences in a way that reduces emotional intensity and shifts long-standing patterns through somatic and body experience.

Therapy can be both practical and empowering, and it can lead to meaningful improvements in how people feel, think, and live their daily lives.

Who do you think tends to feel most comfortable working with you?

People who value a warm, direct, and down-to-earth approach tend to feel most comfortable working with me.

I create a space that is non-judgemental, respectful, and collaborative.

Clients who appreciate both practical strategies and deeper therapeutic work — and who want to better understand themselves — often connect well with my style.

Outside of qualifications, what personal strengths do you bring into your work?

I bring strong empathy, curiosity, and the ability to connect with people in a genuine and grounded way. I am able to balance warmth with structure, helping clients feel safe while also supporting meaningful progress.

My background in complex systems and problem-solving allows me to break things down into manageable steps, while still holding the bigger picture of a person’s life and experiences.

I bring lived experience in being late-diagnosed neurodivergent and raising a neurodivergent child also.

What’s something about you that might surprise people?

Before becoming a therapist, I spent over 20 years working in corporate and IT-related roles, including project and change management.

This background shapes how I work today — I naturally integrate structure, strategy, and practical tools into therapy, which many clients find helpful.

I also bring a multicultural perspective and value connection, curiosity, and continuous learning.
